An Exploration of 6-Word Stories with Crystal

7th+

Description: Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words ("For sale: baby shoes, never worn."), and rumored to have called it his best work. The "six-word story" has become a popular writing prompt, testing writers' ability to create their own short masterpieces with all sorts of results. Using the book, I Can't Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous and Obscure, we will explore 6-word stories (written by teens) through discussion, analysis, and writing.

About the Book: SMITH magazine, launched online in 2006, challenged readers and famous writers alike to submit their own six-word memoirs. Some of the very best memoirs were by teens, so the editors decided to create a book written entirely by those bold, brash truth-tellers. From cancer to creativity, prom dates to promiscuity, and breaking hearts to breaking laws, the memoirs in I Can't Keep My Own Secrets reveal that often, the youngest writers have the most fascinating stories to tell.

Parental Advisory: This book includes mature themes, including (but not limited to) suicide, sexuality, drugs, eating disorders, mental illness, death, etc.

Please Note: Students must be comfortable with participating in group discussions, sharing written work and ideas, and the process of writing for this class. Homework will include all reading assignments and some written assignments.
